How do I get a New Jersey real estate license?
Before enrolling in a real estate pre-licensure course, it’s essential to understand the following details. To acquire a New Jersey real estate salesperson license, you must fulfill several requirements:
- All applicants for salesperson and broker licenses must demonstrate good character, trustworthiness, honesty, and integrity. They are required to undergo a criminal history record check.
- Upon completing the course successfully, when taking the state exam, applicants will face specific “screening questions” related to the statutory qualifications for real estate licensure.
- Requirements include being at least 18 years old
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- No convictions for forgery, burglary, robbery, any theft offense (excluding shoplifting), criminal conspiracy to defraud, or similar offenses in the 5 years before applying for licensure.
- The Real Estate Commission may approve or deny licensure for individuals convicted of specified offenses beyond the 5 years or those who have had a professional license denied or revoked in any state.
Candidates applying for a New Jersey Real Estate License must undergo the fingerprinting process before obtaining the license. This is mandatory after completing the 75-hour pre-licensing course and before the ELIGIBILITY EXPIRATION DATE. Each candidate has one year from the last day of their pre-licensure class to complete the following steps:
- Schedule, take, and pass the state examination by PSI Services
- Provide evidence of fingerprinting by submitting the completed Universal Form and payment receipt from Identogo
- Pay the criminal history record check fee directly to Identogo, totaling $62.69
- Submit a fully completed application for licensure to the REC Licensing Services Bureau through a sponsoring broker.
What classes do I need to take to get my New Jersey Real Estate License?
You must take two courses to be eligible for the NJ Real Estate Salesperson state licensing exam. The Real Estate Practice class is 45 hours; the other, Real Estate Fundamentals, is 30 hours. It doesn’t matter which class you start first but you must complete both. You’ll take one exam per course on the content you studied, and you must pass each course exam. You receive a transcript upon completion, which will allow you to apply and register for the state-administered New Jersey real estate license exam with the national testing company.
